Axis War Heroes: Hans-Joachim Marseille - AWH 120619

The rest of this series can be found HERE

Hans-Joachim Marseille (pictured above) was a German citizen of French heritage who was a bit of a rebel at school until he found a teacher who took an interest in guiding his exuberant personality.

Marseille went on to pass his exams and start training to become a pilot and Schmitt tells us some of his exploits, including landing on the autobahn to relieve himself and picking a handkerchief up from a pole with the tip of his wing. Soon after this he was engaging in dogfights over the channel, but his rebellious nature got him into trouble again and his superior had him transferred to Africa.

We hear the story of how it came to pass that he was chauffeured in a Generals car, how he defeated his first opponent in the skies above Africa and how the German pilots in Marseille's unit spent their spare time.

After a closer look at the superior who was finally able to guide Marseille in the right direction we then hear about Marseille's unique methods of training and how he prepared himself for his achievements, which had previously been thought impossible to carry out. Adolf Galland even called him "the unrivalled virtuoso among the fighter pilots."

We are able to listen in to actual conversations between Marseille and his friend Stahlschmitt, as remembered by Stahlschmitt in a biography on Marseille. We learn how obsessed Marseille was with his plans of breaking up British fighter defensive circles in the air and how his superior officer reacted to him returning with his airplane full of holes, before he was able to master his craft and put his theories into practise.

We hear what happened when 7 allied fighters tried to jump him as he was coming in to land, which would normally make a pilot defenceless and how one day he shot down 17 enemy planes, 8 of them within 10 minutes. The presentation ends with some sad information about how and why Marseille died before Schmitt tells us the glorious way he was remembered by his comrades.

Presented by Messerschmitt, Sven Longshanks and Dennis Wise
