Dr Matthew Raphael Johnson talks about asceticism and links it to warriors, fathers and activists.
St. John Climacus (of the Ladder) was a scholar of the ascetic life living in the late 7th century near Mount Sinai. His feast day is April 12, and is the center of Lenten observance.
The ascetic life is the limitation of bodily desires so that reason can flourish. Passion and reason cannot function together for the same reason sin and virtue cannot.
The Ladder describes how the soul can be altered through the ascetic virtues. Each of his 30 steps on his ladder deals with an important topic on the ascetic and intellectual virtues.
These virtues are the same in the soldier facing his fears on the battlefield, a father protecting his family from a hostile world or an activist facing certain poverty and jail for speaking the truth.
The relationship of nationalism, the Orthodox virtues, justice and self-denial are the basis for a rational life and is something liberalism can never comprehend.
