Dr Matthew Raphael Johnson looks into the deeper meaning of ‘stupidity’.
Today's broadcast evaluates several of the most important theories on the phenomenon of stupidity. Stupidity is not ignorance – which is just the lack of knowledge – but rather the inability to distinguish between truth and opinion. It is found in every walk of life and is the most dangerous phenomenon in social life.
The stupid cannot distinguish between the essential and the extraneous. They suffer from an often self-imposed cognitive defect where their reason is interrupted by extrinsic variables such as self-interest, reputation, fear or economic necessity and cannot distinguish between the two.
The Dunning-Kruger Effect (1999) suggests that the stupid have much higher levels of confidence than the intelligent because they are ignorant about their ignorance. Ignorance is situational – not a defect – but stupidity is an integral part of the personality that is content with the superficial and mechanical.
