Sven Longshanks, TruthVids and PatriArt look at the years following Cnut’s death and the Saxons returning to the throne.
Harold the son of Cnut reigned as King, but because the church would not recognise his claim he tricked one of the Saxon princes into returning to see his mother and had his eyes put out.
The Saxon prince was actually his half brother and when he died and his full brother Hardicanut came to the throne, he had Harold’s body dug up, decapitated and thrown into a bog.
He then welcomed the other half brother Edward back who following Hardicanut’s death became king, much to the approval of the English.
However because he had spent much of his youth on the continent, he developed a taste for soft living and felt he had more in common with the Normans than the Saxons.
This was to cause problems for him when he was seen to be favouring them, over his own subjects.
