In today's broadcast, Dr. Matthew Raphael Johnson takes on Metropolitan Sergius (Stragorodsky), the leader of the church under the Soviets, and his claim that the USSR was “ordained by God.” Relying on St. Paul's Letter to the Romans (13:1) on obedience to authority, Sergius attempted to justify the Soviet state and demanded obedience to it. The truth is that “all power” is not from God. After all, the Antichrist will be a “power.” The mere fact that a body has power over another does not mean that it is “from God.” Yet the Soviet church, as well as American Protestants, believe precisely that.
