When Matthew Raphael Johnson started college in 1990, the entire Soviet empire began to totter and, very quickly, fell into chaos. This was a unique event in history, since it was a large empire in peacetime which suddenly and rapidly imploded with no obvious external force. From then on, Dr. Johnson has been preoccupied with Russia, the USSR and the Orthodox royal heritage of the eastern Slavs. More to the point, the question is how and why did this bizarre set of events occur in the way it did? Why did no one predict it? Part I deals with the USSR from the death of Stalin to the removal of Khrushchev, while Part II will bring the discussion to Gorbachev and Yeltsin.
